Connect your domain

Learn how to point your domain, update DNS records, and prepare your website for launch.

Domain setup

How to connect your domain

You can use your own domain with your website. In most cases, this means updating DNS records at your domain registrar or DNS provider.

If someone else manages your DNS, send them these instructions or contact us and we can guide the process with you.

Before you start

Gather these details first

Make sure you can log in to the provider where your DNS is managed. This is often your domain registrar, cloud DNS provider, or hosting provider.

Confirm whether you are connecting your root domain, like example.com, or a subdomain, like www.example.com.

If your current website is already live, plan the timing of the change carefully to avoid unexpected disruption.

You will usually need

Access to DNS settings, your domain name, and the target values we provide for your site.

If you are not sure

Contact us before making changes. We can confirm what type of DNS record is appropriate.

Typical DNS records

Common DNS setups

The correct records depend on whether you are connecting an apex domain or a subdomain.

Use the values provided for your environment. Do not copy the placeholders below directly into production without replacing them.

Root domain

Use this when connecting example.com directly.

Type: A
Host/Name: @
Value: YOUR_SERVER_IP
TTL: 300 or Auto

WWW subdomain

Use this when connecting www.example.com.

Type: CNAME
Host/Name: www
Value: target.yourdomain.com
TTL: 300 or Auto

Custom subdomain

Use this for something like site.example.com.

Type: CNAME
Host/Name: site
Value: target.yourdomain.com
TTL: 300 or Auto

Need exact values?

We can provide the correct DNS targets for your server or environment before you make changes.

After you update DNS

What happens next

DNS changes may start working quickly, but full propagation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 to 48 hours depending on provider settings.

Once the domain points correctly, we can verify routing, SSL, and final launch readiness.

Propagation

Changes are not always immediate. Some users may still see the old destination for a while.

SSL

We may need a short window after DNS is correct before the secure certificate is fully active.

Confirmation

Tell us when you have updated the records so we can verify the result from our side.

DNS FAQ

Common domain connection questions

These are the most common questions we hear during domain setup and launch.

Can I use a domain I already own?

Yes. In most cases, you keep your current registrar and only update the DNS records.

Do I need to transfer my domain to you?

Not necessarily. Many clients keep the domain where it is and just point it to the new website.

How long do DNS changes take?

Sometimes a few minutes, sometimes up to 24–48 hours. It depends on the provider and TTL behavior.

Will my current site go offline immediately?

Not always. A careful cutover plan helps reduce risk, especially if the domain already serves live traffic.

Can you do this for us?

Yes. If you want help, contact us and we can guide or manage the setup process with you.
